The first letter is from from Tamire. She seems to be a girl of few words this time around.

Next up is a letter from Celeste. It feels like it's been forever since I last heard from her. It's so good to hear that she is doing well. She is clearly responding to a letter that I wrote in August, about getting ready for my new class of students arrive. She wrote this letter at the end of October, and by then, I'd had my "new students" for two whole months.

I want to tell you that in 2021, if God allows it, I will graduate with a high school diploma in computing. Then I would like to go to technical college. We are about to finish this school year and then I have to move to another school to finish my studies, God willing. In your letter, you asked for prayers for you and the other teachers. We go onto a letter from Mirajul. This is my very first letter from him and it's full of details. He seems like such a treasure. I am so eager to get to know him more and more.

Five Letter (Almost Not) Friday: Volume 11

It is nearly 11 p.m as I begin to type this. I am not sure how I forgot about posting this. I blame the fact that I worked for hours and hours and hours this week getting everything ready in my preschool classroom. Last night was Open House and I met 24 beautiful new 3 year olds who I get the pleasure of teaching this year. Then I came home and collapsed in exhaustion. Then today, I worked at the daycare and completely forgot that it was even Friday.

So, let's see if I can type up 5 letters before it's midnight and it's no longer Friday.

Today's first letter comes from Jonathan who just seems to be responding to a few letters I wrote.

Jonathan is 9 years old, lives in Burkina Faso, and he wrote this letter on August 2nd, 2018.

Five Letter Friday: Volume 2

Another Friday, another five letters. Without further ado...

We start with a letter from Brian. This is an extra long letter from him, compared to his usual letters. In response to all of the stories I've been telling my kids, Brian responded with a story of his own.

Brian is 16 years old, from Kenya, and he wrote this letter on May 10th, 2018.

Dear Kayla, 

Receive warm greetings in genius name, hoping that you are fine together with your family. My family and I are doing well and we give thanks to almighty God. I am happy to write a letter again. I received the letters that you wrote for me and I am happy to know new stories. I have one story I want to share with you. It is about three sons and their father. 

"There once were three boys and their father. Their father taught them goals and morals. So one day the father called them and gave each an egg. The father them each to hide it where nobody could see them. One of the boys hide an egg in a hole. Another hid it under the bed. The last hid the egg in a bush. When they finished, they went and told their father they had hidden the eggs. The father started asking, "who saw you when you were hiding them?" The boys said "no one was." The father said there was only one person who was looking at them. That person was God. From the day, the boys knew that God is everywhere and they were happy. 

Before I wind up I have a memory verse which gives me hope in my life and I want to share with you. It is Jeremiah 29:11. It says, "For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a better future."

I have been hearing in the news and getting notifications from Compassion that things are very hostile in Nicaragua right now, with many protests leading to injuries and deaths. It sounds very scary and my kids are starting to mention things like this in their letters. Breaks my heart. No child (or even older teen) should have to worry about things like that.

Just Your Average Letter Purge Post

I have the day off work today, so I'm trying to catch up on my letter blogging/responding before Christmas. I have been neglecting my responding for the last few weeks and when you write to as many kids as I do, the letters really pile up in just a few weeks.

I'm going to share several letters in this post. Basically, I'll type until I can't focus anymore and then I'll do another post in a couple of days. :)

We'll begin with a letter from my boy Dagim. It sounds like he started the school year off on the right foot. Thank God for Compassion!

Here in my country, we had an eclipse in August, and it could be seen in the city of Tegucigalpa and it lasted for about an hour. We did have this phenomenon since 90 years ago and it is the same eclipse, when the moon places between the earth and the sun. I could not see it because I live far away from Tegucigalpa. More Letters with Pretty Artwork

There is just something extra special about a drawing created by the work of my sponsored children's hands. I just love them so much.

First up, a letter from Ayling, who is 11 years old and lives in Nicaragua. She always writes letters with such great details about her life. She also always asks questions, which makes replying to her letters, and carrying on a conversation, very easy.

I am really in love with this letter, especially the drawing. There are studies done among young children and they have been done all over the world. There is a common among children, regardless of gender, socio-economic status, language, or country. Children that are healthy and well-adjusted commonly draw the same thing when given free space to draw. The draw a basic house, a tree, and a sun in the sky. Children that have been displaced or come from war-torn nations don't draw these things.

From the Field Friday: Honduras

Happy Friday! Today we hear from the wonderful woman running the show in Honduras. Sounds like Compassion is making quite a difference in both rural and urban settings in the country!

I have three fabulous teenagers in Honduras: Celeste, Erick, and Carlos.

Dear Kayla, 

My name is Yolanda Rodas. I have been the country director of Compassion Honduras for six years and I have been a part of Compassion for 13 years. By the grace of God, I have been able to see different stages of Compassion's ministry as I took different roles in the office. This has been very useful in my current position, since I can understand at a closer level what happens in the field with the children and the churches.

Our office in Honduras began in 1999, although work had begun in some regions in 1974, with the support of the Guatemala and El Salvador offices. Currently, we are working with about 200 child development centers and more than 57,000 children. 

Children Registered in Compassion Honduras 

During these years, I have been able to see many lives transformed through the dynamic that exists among sponsors, children, churches, and Compassion. I want to thank you for all the support that you bring daily to Erick, Celeste, and Carlos, expressed through your sponsorship and prayers. I am convinced that the sponsorship you provide really does work, for I have seen it throughout all these years. 

I have seen home being transformed as the cycle of poverty has been broken, thanks to the work of the child development centers and the support sponsors offer. Many of our youth have been the first in their families to complete high school or university education or have the opportunity to learn a trade to sustain themselves and their families. Many children have been diagnosed quickly with an illness that could have taken their lives, but instead they received adequate treatment. Most importantly, I have seen entire households changed with the transforming power of Jesus. Each church that ministers in the lives of children is giving hope to families through the gospel. 

Boys Enjoying a Healthy Snack at their Project 

In our country, we fight each day against poverty, violence and corruption, which are the main challenges for us. Many of our children live in the most violent and poverty-stricken regions of our country. Each day, these young people and children suffer pressures to join a gang, for there they are offered money or a semblance of a family. Some of them live in constant fear of having a family member murdered or losing their own life. 

A Typical Home in Poverty-Ridden Areas in Honduras

Access to the public health system is also a challenge. Even though there are hospitals and community health centers available, they lack qualified personnel and supplies. Education has improved during the last years, but there are still obstacles to overcome, for the system has not yet reached an adequate educational level for our students. 

Children Learning Computer Lessons

In each of these challenge areas, centers are making their best efforts in counterattacking the effects of such overwhelming poverty. They have become an oasis in the desert for these children and youth.

My vision is that we, as Compassion Honduras, can support the churches even more, so they can effectively implement ministry for children and youth. If each church is well equipped, the impact will be even greater on each child and family. We are also working to improve communications between sponsors and children so these can be more effective and help strengthen their relationships.

Please write to your children as much as you can. I wish you could see children's smiling and radiant faces when they receive a sponsor letter. Even though most of them do not know their sponsors personally, it is so important to them to know that someone loves the selflessly and demonstrates a genuine interest in their well-being through letters.

Two from Tanzania, Two From Honduras

As the title suggests, I will be sharing two letters from Tanzania and two letters from Honduras in this post. These four letters are pretty great. I am super happy to share them with you today.

We'll start with a letter from Agness. Her letters crack me up because she always says something along the lines of, "I don't know what else to say" before she ends her letters.

Agness is 14 years old. Her letter is dated June 24th, 2017.

Dear Kayla, 

I hope you are fine together with your family. Firstly, I thank you for the news you sent to me. I am happy to know of the progress of Gage and Chloe. Tell Gage I congratulate him for completing his initial studies. Tell him to try hard in primary school. Thank you for the letter you sent to me, as it is our method or enjoying and saying hello to each other. My family is greeting you so much and we wish one day to celebrate with you. I do not have much else to say but please greet Gage and Chloe. Tell them I love them so much.

Up next, a letter from Emanuel who is also so sweetly greeting and talking about my nanny kids. My sponsored kids really seem to love these little ones.

Dear Kayla, 

I greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. My family and I are proceeding well. It's my hope that you are also proceeding well. I'm proceeding well with my studies at the center. Thank you for the letter you sent to me including Gage and Chloe's photos. They are growing up. Tell Gage congratulations for completing nursery school. He and Chloe should study hard. I'm praying God to protect them and and help them do well in their studies. I congratulate them for their talents. They should maintain them and proceed with it. I would like to give you the Bible verse 2 John 1:2. Amen. I would like to ask you a question. Will Gage go to school near home or will he go to boarding school? God bless you.

Now we move onto those two letters from Honduras. We'll start with the letter from Carlos. 

He is 16 years old and his letter is dated June 10th, 2017.

Hello Dear Kayla, 

How is your health? I am in very good health. My last medical checkup was on March 3rd. My height was 1.64 cm and my weight was 41 kg. My mom came with me to my last medical checkup. I received vitamins and dewormer. I always go to school and learn my classes. I am in the school band and we march on National Tree Day. I am studying hard to reach my goals. I want to tell you that I have a little sister who is 1 year old. My brothers are 3 years old and 14 years old. I like coming to the CDC and it's only 5 minutes away from my home. My mom always works and my grandmother looks after my siblings. During the afternoon, I play with them. Do you have any prayer requests? Pray for me and my family. I will pray for you. I say goodbye with much love.

Hello My Dear Sponsor Kayla, 

I hope you and your beautiful family are healthy. I am healthy, thank God. I want to tell you that my birthday was beautiful. All my friends came and it was a unforgettable night. I am sending you some photographs of my birthday party so you can see it. My grandmother made some delicious popcorn and we had soda. Yes, I do still have the Bible that you gave me when you visited in 2013. I received the gifts you sent me with your friend. Everything was beautiful. Thank you for that. Every verse you send me fills me with happiness and is useful in my spiritual life. It seems you have fun. We don't have all the four seasons as you in my country. We are in summer most of the year and it is very hot. I do consider myself a princess of the Lord. I read Galatians 4:7 and it blessed me. I say goodbye with love and kisses.
