Five Letter Friday: Volume 22

What happened to Volume 21?

The world may never know.

I swear it doesn't have anything to do with me forgetting to post and then not wanting the numbers to not match, leading me to skipping the #21 entirely.

No. That can't be it.

It just vanished into thin air!

How strange...

Ahem...well, maybe it'll turn up someday. Until then, five letters for volume 22!

Today will be a bit funny because the first two letters will all be the same template, entitled How I Have Fun, from two different kiddos in Kenya. I received them both in the same week and think it's fun to post them all together.

First up is the letter from Muuo, who is 8 years old. His letter is dated November 9th, 2018. Some of his letters crack me up! He seems like quite a funny character.

This next letter is also from Kenya. This time, a letter from Baraka, who recently graduated from using the templates. It appears as if he's still having a project worker help him write this letter. Not much is said in this particular letter, but I imagine there will be a little bit of a transition period as he works on writing things for himself, versus answering pre-written questions.

Five Letter Friday: Volume 15

Happy Friday! I don't know about you, but my week has just flown by! My preschool director just passed out our October calendars to hand out to our students and I can't believe that next week is October!

But, that does not halt the letter sharing! The love from children all over the world keeps pouring in!

Today's post will be a nice mix of younger/older, template letter/free-form letter. It should be fun!

We start with a letter from Kwizera. He is one of the kiddos who really seems to love being paired up with another one of my children as a prayer partner. Whenever I send Kwizera info about his prayer partner Mulwa, he always responds!

Kwizera is 13 years old and lives in Rwanda. His letter is dated August 29th, 2018.

Warm greetings in the name of Jesus Christ from your child and my family! I am happy to write this letter to you today, to let you know how I am doing with my family. All is well in my country. We have started the raining season and people are growing beans. School is going well. We have just started the third term. I hope to get good grades. Please pray for me to perform well. I was thrilled with the new picture of Mulwa that you sent to me, telling me about his birthday. It pleased me so much. Please tell him I wish him a happy birthday. I love him and pray for him. My birthday is on November 15th. I will turn 14 years old. I was very pleased by your letter. I am happy to hear how you are doing with your family. This next letter is from Muzuro. His letter makes me chuckle a bit because it almost seems like a homework assignment of sorts. I sent all of my kids the story of Pinocchio in a recent letter and Muzuro wrote back with a short summary of the story. There is just something about that that I love so much! He really took the lessons from the story to heart and applied them to his life. It's wonderful! 

Muzuro is 15 years old, lives in Uganda, and he wrote this letter on August 30th, 2018.

Dear Kayla, 

I am very happy with the story you sent me this time. The story was very interesting and I read it together with my friends. What I learned from this story is that we should listen to our parents. If you listen to Gepetto, you will someday be a real boy. So I learned that if we listen to our parents, we will be blessed. But if we don't listen to our parents, our future will be incomplete. And from the other part that says, "In the morning, he was happy to Pinocchio alive! He gave Pinocchio some money to buy books for school and told him to go straight to school without stopping." But then some bad boys stopped Pinocchio. So I learned that when we are on our way to school, or another place, and we see a bad group of people, we should run away from them because otherwise you could be raped or killed. We should be careful on our way. And if our parents give us money for school supplies, we should use it well. 

So I am very happy to read this story and I learned many things. I want you to send another story to improve my life. May the Lord bless you. Thanks a lot!

Five Letter Friday Volume 1

At the super high rate that I've been receiving letters (I received 6 letters TODAY) and the super low rate of me actually finding the time/effort to actually get those letters posted, I'm going to make myself a set schedule. Because I like alliteration, I will be titling these posts Five Letter Fridays and Three Letter Tuesdays. 

8 letters posted a week. I know that sounds like a lot, but I seriously have 45 letters backed up that I haven't posted on my blog and even more that I haven't sat down to respond to (that's my project for this week...and probably several more weekends...). 

I love writing to my kids and I'm typically so on top of these things, but with my new full time job this summer and my extra events (small group, trivia, piano lessons, seeing my family) my weekdays are pretty much booked. 

So, without further ado, let's begin our first Five Letter Friday! 

The first letter in this series comes from Ernest, who is 12 years old, and lives in Ghana. His letter is dated March 7th, 2018.

From the Field Friday: KE-235

The end of March is upon us, so let's read another letter from the field! This letter is from the project in Kenya that my boy Baraka attends.

Dear Kayla, 

I am Pastor Gabriel Kioko of the Good News Church of Africa, which has partnered with Compassion International to serve Baraka in the Kikumini Child Development Center. 

I thank and worship God for your support of Baraka in my community. I lack supreme words to thank you, but I promise to mention that you are in our prayers and God to bless you. Your support to Baraka is a master key to a destiny filled with hope. I glorify God for your kind gesture. 

I minister in a church that is in a community composed of one major tribe called Kamba. The Kamba people are small-scale farmers and casual laborers. The weather is mainly hot, sunny, and dusty. Kikumini is located in the semi-arid part of eastern Kenya in Makueni County. The area experiences short rains which come in March through May. 

My community faces challenges that many a time as a church we can't minister to effectively, though government and other non-government organizations are trying to work in hand to bring development to the community. There is a high level of illiteracy and low-incomes lead to lack  of school fees. Many children drop out of school and many thereafter engage in drinking and drug abuse. There are health issues that affect the community and due to their financial status, the people somewhat struggle to access health facilities. We have a number of orphans and children from single parents and the church is trying to support those we can, though it is a challenge. 

We as a church have the great commission that we have committed to do. Our vision is to fulfill the attitude that was in Christ: a heart for little ones, as he said, "let the little children come to me." To be effective in it, we need to be empowered to be able to sufficiently meet the basic needs of our children, which is food, health, shelter, and education. Also, we need to capture their talents and enable them to be independent in the future and deliver themselves from the chains of poverty. It's our main objective to instill the Word of God in their hearts, so pray with us to accomplish our visionary dream of raising this generation that will bring justice, fairness, and be the voice of the weak in our community. Whenever I engage with these little children, I thank God and pray for the sponsors. 

In addition to the Compassion ministry, we have instituted a Bible school. We also conduct some awareness on HIV/AIDS and farming. We voluntarily give out services in guidance and counseling and we are actively involved in the community. We are planning and praying to start prison visitations, targeting rehabilitating the children who are serving their sentences in our correction institutions.

Having letters from sponsors is really building the children's communication skills. When the children and their families receive these letters, they are really excited and they always keep hoping to hear how their sponsor is doing. It is encouraging for them. 

I thank you for supporting Baraka and walking a journey together. You are most welcome to come to Kenya to visit us. Please pray for us that we may have more children receive a sponsor.

Words and Drawings from Sweet Artists

On Thursday morning, I received some pretty heartbreaking news. Keeping my emotions at bay at work with my students on Thursday and Friday, but by Friday night, I was kind of in full meltdown mode. I cried and prayed, on and off. Saturday arrived and I spent all but a few hours in bed. Literally the whole day. I hardly ate and I didn't take a shower until 7:00 p.m, but then put my pajamas back on. 

I not sharing this with you for sympathy. I am just telling it like it is. I, thankfully, don't suffer from depression, but in this situation, I am depressed. Every little thing sounds so hard and I'm just so upset. I am trying to remain hopeful and keep my eyes on God. I have done nothing besides listen to Christian music, to try to keep some hope and positivity flowing. 

Another thing that is keeping me going is friends. I have gathered a few prayer warriors and have other friends who are helping me look for solutions to my current situation. 

Finally, helping me stay positive is writing to my kids and reading their letters. I have such wonderful children writing to me from all over the world, how can I stay sad for too long? So, I am typing up some letters today, to remember the love that comes from all over the world, for encouragement, and, if I'm being honest, as a little distraction. It is currently 2 a.m on Sunday morning and I don't want to go to bed...

I'll share a letter from Ernest first. Every letter that I get from him comes with the hope that he would write his own letters. Whatever tutor he has writing to him must not encourage him to share any details about his life. Each one is basically the same. But, I get to see more of Ernest's personality in his drawings and I love that a lot. 

Ernest is 12 years old and lives in Ghana. His letter is dated January 23rd, 2018.

I love the good, impressive drawings from my kids, of course, but there will always be a special place in my heart for the art that is not-so-great, haha. For the art that is drawn by kids who aren't destined to be famous artists. It's probably because I have zero drawing talent. Whether a child is a future Van Gogh or he barely manages to draw a stick figure, any drawing a child makes for you is a gift. A true treasure. 

I move onto a letter from 9 year old Bryan, who lives in Nicaragua. He wrote this letter on January 13th, 2018.

On the same day as I received that last letter from Muuo, I also received another one from him. I did not hear from him in January, as I did from most of my other Kenyan kids, so it looks like this is "make-up work" of sorts for Muuo. It looks like he had to write it on the same day as his Dreams letter. Double the letter writing. Guess that's what he gets for missing the last letter writing day. ;)

Three Photo Updates: Emanise, Baraka, and Muzuro

Three mornings in a row this week I woke up to a new photo of one of my kids. It has definitely been a great week!

Emanise sure has grown up since I first started corresponding with her! I love her new photo with the professional blazer. She looks like an adult! ;) 

I think Baraka looks pretty similar to his previous photo, but he sure is handsome. Kiddos don't change too much in looks in that middle childhood range. I bet I'll see a change in him in his next photo, though! 

Looks like Muzuro ditched the school uniform in his latest photo. I love the bright blue on his shirt and the bright look in his eyes. What a great guy he is.

Now a letter from little Bryan, who lives in Nicaragua. his is the first letter he's completely written on his own! He filled the whole page with his adorable, loopy handwriting. :)

God bless you! I am so happy for writing to you! I love your letters. I want to tell you that my project friends and I will go to the dinosaur park. We will also go to the pool. I like going out. My favorite food is friend chicken. There are four classrooms in my project. I like to be my friends. I like December because my family gives me Christmas presents. My mother always cooks deliciously on Christmas. I feel happy because I am on school vacation. I am playing more with my friends. I have never seen an eclipse. I will close out this post with a letter from a little girl named Veronika. She wrote this letter on the My School Break template. To be honest, I find this template a bit odd. Some of the questions seem out of place to me. But oh well, it's always good to hear anything bout kids, right?
