My Teens are So Lovely

I just can't express in words how wonderful my teenagers are. They are each so talented and special and loved. They also write wonderful letters. I feel so honored to be a part of each of their lives, for as long as God allows. I will share letters from four of these lovely teens today.

I'll start with Marinelis. This letter was stuck in transit for awhile, but it finally arrived to my account. Better late than never because this letter has some great information.

Marinelis is 15 years old and lives in the Dominican Republic. The letter is dated March 4th, 2017.

Dear Kayla,

Hello! How are you and your family? I haven't written back because they haven't given me the paper to write to you. I will now answer your questions. My house is made out of cement blocks. I live with my mom and my siblings. I sleep on a bed. Yes, we get water through indoor piping. The most common jobs in my community are car driver, motorcycle taxi driver, and caretaker. Compassion helps the community and helps the children do their homework. People in my community are located by motorcycle and bus. In the project, I like the word of God and the trips that they organize. The typical foods in my community are rice, beans, and meat. Yes, there are very well-known places in my country and people from other countries visit my country. Yes, I have been praying for Brandilyn and for her marriage. My family and I are very well thanks to God. Tell Brandilyn I say hello.

Goodbye with Love,
Marinelis

Onto a letter from my sweet Erick. In his letter, he is also answering many of my questions. It's fun to learn even the smallest details about our kids. Helps us see more into their personalities.

Erick is 14 years old and lives in Honduras and his letter is dated June 26th, 2017.

Dear Sponsor Kayla,

It is a pleasure to communicate with you today. How are you and your family members? I am very healthy. I tell you that I am getting on well at school and my favorite subject is natural science. I am thankful for the photographs, letter, and drawings that you sent me. They are very beautiful. My school is large and there are 300 students. Classes have begun and I am in 7th grade. What do you like to study? Here in Honduras, the weather is a little hot and sometimes cold. I ask you to pray that I do well in my studies and that I am able to pass the grade. I hope to hear from you soon and to read your letters and to know that you are happy. I will answer your questions now. When I am sad I like to read books. I am very afraid of snakes. I do not play any instruments. I look like my older sister. When I am older, I want to be an architect. I write with my right hand. My chores at home are to clean my room and clean my clothes. I like to sleep and play soccer. My favorite animal is the dog. My favorite color is red. My favorite food is Chinese rice. I support Honduras, but I like Real Madrid. I have two sisters. Jenni is 15 years old and Marbella is 9 years old. My grandmother likes to watch TV.

With Love,
Erick

Now a letter from Sevenson. This young man went quite awhile without writing to me and I have recently been receiving letters from him again.

Sevenson is 16 years old and is from Haiti. He wrote this letter on June 19th, 2017.

Dear Kayla,

I'm happy to greet you in the name of the Savior. My family and I are very well. I hope that you and your family are fine. My school activities are going very well. I always succeed in the exams. My favorite subject is mathematics. My church activities are going very well and I always participate in Sunday School. How are your church activities going? Thanks for the letter you sent me. Pray for me so that I can have a good school vacation. I'm praying God to bless you.

I will end with a letter from Jose. This letter was WAY stuck somewhere in cyberspace. It took over 6 months to get to me! No idea...

I asked my kids to describe their perfect day. I love Jose's answer!

Jose is 18 years old and lives in Peru. His letter is dated December 9th, 2016.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Sponsor Kayla,

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus. I'm hoping that you are in good health. First of all, thank you for the letters you sent me. I'm in good health. I used to like balls and remote control cars when I was a child. Well, my perfect day would be one where I could sleep late, be at home helping my mom with the chores, spend the whole afternoon with my siblings, playing in the countryside, arrive home at night, watch TV with my family, and go to bed late with my siblings in one bed. My best friends are my siblings because we experience many things together. Once, we were raising sheep at my house and we took them to the field to feed them. We got distracted playing and the sheep got lost. It was very late when we realized that and we spent a lot of time trying to find them. Finally, we found them late at night. We returned home very late and my mom scolded us. We experience these kids of things together as siblings. My message to Taye is to continue studying to fulfill his dreams and to always be with God, because His arrival is very soon. Which were your favorite toys when you were a child? Which is your favorite Bible story? Please pray for me and my family, for our health, so everything may be alright with us. Goodbye with a strong hug and kiss.

Your Sponsored Child,
Jose

A Trio of Love from Kenya

I have been blessed with such a wonderful group of kids from Kenya. I've heard from three of those wonderful kids this week. I am so happy to share those letters with you today.

Let's start off with a letter from my daughter Faith. This is actually a letter that has been stuck in the system for a very long time. I have received letters from her written after this letter, but this one just arrived.

Faith is 11 years old and she wrote this letter on December 2nd, 2016.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Hello Kayla!

I hope you are fine. I am fine and I am going on well with my family members. I thank God for protecting us. My school is called Ithumbi Primary School. We closed our school for vacation. I am promoted to standard 6. May you pray for me as I am praying for you and your community. I wish to meet you and have a verbal talk with you. I go to church at Itumbule Baptist Church. We recite verses and sing. I wish you a good Christmas and happy new year. I share this verse; Ephesians 4:5. It says, "One Lord, one faith, one baptism." May God bless you!

Faith

_______________________________________________________________________________

Onto a more current letter now, from Brian. He is 15 years old. His letter is dated July 1st, 2017.

________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Kayla,

Receive warm greetings in Jesus' name. I hope that you are doing well. It is another opportunity to write a letter to you. I received the letters from you and I enjoyed reading them. I am glad that God has been protecting me and my family. I usually pray for you and your family. The weather in my country is rainy. Before I wind up, I want to share a memory verse with you from Jeremiah 29:11. "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you, but not harm you. Plans to give you hope and a better future." Thank you for your support and may God bless you.

Brian

________________________________________________________________________________

Lastly, a letter from Lemayian. He is a Masaii child and his family relies almost solely on their crops and their cattle. It sounds like things are not going so well with either of those things right now, do to lack of rain. I am so glad that Lemayian has Compassion to help him in this time of drought.

_________________________________________________________________________________

First, I am greeting you inn the name of our Lord. It is my hope and prayer that you are fine in the Lord with your family. We have planted maize in our gardens, but they have dried up. Pray for our country's general elections and for the rain. Our cattle have migrated and we are praying it will rain soon. Thank you for supporting me and my family. I thank you for the five letters I have received from you. I am very happy and my family is also happy. I hope to hear from you again as I am now in polytechnic (higher education). I trust God that I will do well. Good bye.

From the Field Friday: Ecuador

I'm coming at ya with another country director letter! Are you ready?!

Today's letter is from a familiar face...again! Jose Carrasco is apparently also in charge of running the Ecuador offices, on top of running the Brazil and Colombian offices, ON TOP of overseeing all of the South American programs.

A friend and I talked about how Compassion really needs to hire some more workers in South America...

I just have the one sweet boy in Ecuador; Daniel.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Dear Kayla,

Greetings in Jesus' name! My name is Jose Carrasco. I am the South American area director, and I've been privileged to serve as the country director of Ecuador since 2016. I was born in Peru. I am married to Laura and we have two wonderful children, Jose Alonso and Natalia.

Jose Carrasco and His Wife

Thank you for being our partner in this endeavor by loving and support Daniel. Your love and care mean everything to the future of your child. Thank you for your generosity.

Compassion has been serving Ecuador for 42 years. God's faithfulness has allowed us to see results in many lives. We currently have more than 260 child development centers in Ecuador serving more than 97,000 children and youth. Their development is consistent, due to the sustainability of the program. Its holistic approach brings transformation as the children apply Christian values and healthy behaviors while they're with their families and in their communities.

Children Singing Songs in Their Project

Compassion is commuted to continue to reach children in areas of extreme poverty in Ecuador. One of the greatest struggles our children face in the public schools and in their neighborhoods is the aggressive approach by street drug dealers. They see children in need as instruments to introduce drugs into their schools and communities. In impoverished areas, it is common to see parents with a large number of children forced to leave them alone under the care of the oldest child, who is yet a minor, while the parents work to support the family. This situation leaves the children vulnerable to corrupt individuals. This phenomenon is a real threat for those children and their communities.

An Impoverished Neighborhood in Ecuador

Although a handful of government medical centers re accessible in many low-income areas, they lack the medicine to treat the people, so families are forced to look elsewhere for medications. Clean, running water is always lacking, and although local vendors sell and deliver it in some areas, families often don't have the means to buy it.

A Single-Parent Household

In the past two years, God has allowed us to see significant movement in impoverished communities where no churches existed. New churches are opening as a result of church-planting efforts in some areas. These new churches have a clear vision to serve in such a way that their presence is causing a stir in their communities.

Children Reading Bibles Provided to Them By Their Project

One cannot describe the bond that exists between the sponsor and the child. We can't measure the happiness and hope children experience when they learn the will be sponsored and that soon they will receive a letter, a photo, or even a visit. That is why we encourage you to keep in contact with your child. It is absolutely wonderful to see children celebrating as they receive correspondence from their sponsors, but children who receive no letters are so disappointed. The love and care of a sponsor, expressed in letters, lifts children up in ways you could never imagine.

Children Writing Letters to Their Sponsors

As we look around and see a new generation of children in need in Ecuador, we are in awe with the realization of the huge task God has entrusted to us. On behalf of the children of Ecuador, I would like to express my appreciation for sponsors' support and prayers. The children registered in our program are blessed and they are aware that not everyone in their communities has the same opportunity.

Children Praying Before a Meal in Their Project

It is because of you that Daniel can be valued and loved, learn to walk with Jesus, and become a responsible and healthy adult. Your giving has changed the destiny of your child, and that is priceless! My hearts fills with joy as I express my appreciation and recognize your generous giving.

Sincerely in Christ,
Jose Carrasco

Final Letters from Uganda

I have developed some wonderful relationships with some great teenagers in Uganda. After this post, I will have just one wonderful young man in that country. My little brother Eric will graduate from Compassion on the 1st of August. Now, this letter that I'm about to share is not an official last letter, so to be honest, I have no idea why I am sharing it today, haha. But, as this may be the last letter I receive from him, I am sharing it as his "final" letter.

Eric is 21 years old. His letter is dated June 16th, 2017.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Kayla,

Receive love and special greetings in the name of Jesus Christ. How are you, plus the members of your family? Back to me, I am okay. The members of my family have sent their love and greetings to you. Thank you so much for sending to me a nice and lovely letter with encouraging words. God bless you. In our area, it is the season of harvesting beans and it is a dry season with a lot of dust. What is the condition of the weather in your area? Convey my love and greetings to the members of your family, telling them that I love you so much. How is Gage and Chloe? May God bless you so much for the good work you are doing raising us as your children.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Then, I received a letter from Brenda, written on the Final Letter stationery. It turns out that Brenda's family was able to buy a larger, more successful farm and move to another area. I am so happy that she will be able to complete high school and it seems she has big dreams for the future!

Brenda is 18 years old. Her letter is dated July 5th, 2017.

________________________________________________________________________________

Dear My Best Friend,

I am greeting you in the name of our Almighty God. I believe you are doing well over there. I appreciate God for the support you've always given me - your beloved child.

I am writing to inform you that my family is shifting from Kisoro to Kiboga district where Compassion programs are not available. My family members sold off the small, unproductive pieces of land we had in Kisoro and bought a bigger, more fertile piece of land in Kiboga, which they are now using to grow crops and are happily living there.

Through your support, I learnt the word of God. I was given a Bible, which allowed me to grow strong in faith and I have been instrumental in teaching others spiritual songs and guiding and counseling them. I have been an active team member in volleyball and I am able to express myself freely. I am peaceful and humble and I don't fall sick time and again. I am free from poverty related diseases like ringworm, malaria, and typhoid.

As you are aware, I am now in Senior Four. My parents promised to continue supporting me and meeting my school fee payments. My parents hope to be established farmers. Continue praying for me that I will become a medical doctor in the future.

I pray that God will continue to richly bless the works for your hand, as you have been blessing me with gifts and interesting letters. Bye Bye.

From Your Child,
Brenda

Manna Backpacks: 2017

One of the amazing, fun perks in sponsoring with Manna 4 Lempira is that we get to pack backpacks for our kids. These backpacks are shipped to Honduras and arrive just in time for Christmas. The backpacks must include specific school supplies. After that, hygiene items and clothes are highly encouraged. Whatever space is left can be used for fun items like toys, jewelry, etc.

My tactic for these backpacks (except for my newer kids) was to put a backpack for each boy in the closet. Then I shopped all year and filled up the bags slowly, over the months. This was the best option for me, so I could spread out the money spending significantly.

Now, the backpacks are finished! I took photos of everything and then packed it all neatly into the backpacks. I will be shipping them soon!

Without further ado, let me show you what I am sending to each of my boys. I am going to post from oldest to youngest.

Two from Tanzania, Two From Honduras

As the title suggests, I will be sharing two letters from Tanzania and two letters from Honduras in this post. These four letters are pretty great. I am super happy to share them with you today.

We'll start with a letter from Agness. Her letters crack me up because she always says something along the lines of, "I don't know what else to say" before she ends her letters.

Agness is 14 years old. Her letter is dated June 24th, 2017.

________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Kayla,

I hope you are fine together with your family. Firstly, I thank you for the news you sent to me. I am happy to know of the progress of Gage and Chloe. Tell Gage I congratulate him for completing his initial studies. Tell him to try hard in primary school. Thank you for the letter you sent to me, as it is our method or enjoying and saying hello to each other. My family is greeting you so much and we wish one day to celebrate with you. I do not have much else to say but please greet Gage and Chloe. Tell them I love them so much.

Your Dear,
Agness

_________________________________________________________________________________

Up next, a letter from Emanuel who is also so sweetly greeting and talking about my nanny kids. My sponsored kids really seem to love these little ones.

Emanuel is 20 years old. He wrote this letter on July 8th, 2017.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Kayla,

I greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. My family and I are proceeding well. It's my hope that you are also proceeding well. I'm proceeding well with my studies at the center. Thank you for the letter you sent to me including Gage and Chloe's photos. They are growing up. Tell Gage congratulations for completing nursery school. He and Chloe should study hard. I'm praying God to protect them and and help them do well in their studies. I congratulate them for their talents. They should maintain them and proceed with it. I would like to give you the Bible verse 2 John 1:2. Amen. I would like to ask you a question. Will Gage go to school near home or will he go to boarding school? God bless you.

Emanuel

________________________________________________________________________________

Now we move onto those two letters from Honduras. We'll start with the letter from Carlos.

He is 16 years old and his letter is dated June 10th, 2017.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Hello Dear Kayla,

How is your health? I am in very good health. My last medical checkup was on March 3rd. My height was 1.64 cm and my weight was 41 kg. My mom came with me to my last medical checkup. I received vitamins and dewormer. I always go to school and learn my classes. I am in the school band and we march on National Tree Day. I am studying hard to reach my goals. I want to tell you that I have a little sister who is 1 year old. My brothers are 3 years old and 14 years old. I like coming to the CDC and it's only 5 minutes away from my home. My mom always works and my grandmother looks after my siblings. During the afternoon, I play with them. Do you have any prayer requests? Pray for me and my family. I will pray for you. I say goodbye with much love.

Carlos Alexander

To end, a letter from Celeste. This letter comes with some pretty wonderful photos of her quinceneara!

Celeste is 15 years old and wrote this letter on June 10th, 2017.

Hello My Dear Sponsor Kayla,

I hope you and your beautiful family are healthy. I am healthy, thank God. I want to tell you that my birthday was beautiful. All my friends came and it was a unforgettable night. I am sending you some photographs of my birthday party so you can see it. My grandmother made some delicious popcorn and we had soda. Yes, I do still have the Bible that you gave me when you visited in 2013. I received the gifts you sent me with your friend. Everything was beautiful. Thank you for that. Every verse you send me fills me with happiness and is useful in my spiritual life. It seems you have fun. We don't have all the four seasons as you in my country. We are in summer most of the year and it is very hot. I do consider myself a princess of the Lord. I read Galatians 4:7 and it blessed me. I say goodbye with love and kisses.

Celeste

From the Field Friday: East Indonesia

Today's country director letter is different than any posted so far for one reason. The director that runs the show in East Indonesia is a woman! That may not seem so odd, by our standards here in the first world, but in a developing nation, especially an Asian country, woman are often not seen as leaders or as intelligent as men. Having a woman in charge of the business of so many projects is an accomplishment, for sure!

I have one precious girl in East Indonesia; Prity!

______________________________________________________________________________

Dear Kayla,

I am Georry Nefiantuty, country director of Compassion East Indonesia. I am originally from Badung, West Java, in the Western part of Indonesia. I started working with Compassion Bandung in 2001, and four years later, I was appointed to start the new office in East Indonesia. I feel blessed to have experiences in these two offices so I can understand all of Indonesia from end to end.

Georry Nefiantuty

Compassion East Indonesia now has more than 240 church partners. Together we are serving about 55,000 sponsored children, more than 1400 mothers and babies in the survival program, and about 45 Leadership Development Program students. We can minister to these many children because of faithful sponsors like you. I would like to thank you for your love, continuous prayers, and support for Prity. Your child can experience the love of Jesus Christ.

A Group of Happy Papuan Children

East Indonesia is huge and most of the areas are remote. We thank God that our current government is giving special attention to East Indonesia's infrastructure development, so access to remote areas is becoming more and more open now. In the past, public facilities to remote areas were very rare and very expensive. Most of the transportation from island to island and also within the island is by plane, because each island mostly still has vast, protected forest. East Indonesia is also famous for its many tourist destinations.

Impoverished Homes in East Indonesia

Sponsored children are protected and know where to go for help in difficult situations. They have appropriate medical treatment when they are sick. One girl in Kalimantan Island survived leukemia. Now she is healthy and active in the child development center.

Children who are victims of abuse get medical and psychological treatment. Their cases are legally processed too; some of the perpetrators are in jail now. Every center has a trained child-protection champion who helps educate center staff, parents, and children on child protection and follows up on child-protection issues.

Children Taking a Class in Their Project

In this healthy environment, the children can have dreams and reach them. For example, one of the LDP students passed the final exam and will graduate soon from university. In 2017, 12 more LDP students will graduate.

An Older Boy Working Hard

There are always challenges in ministering to children in poverty. Many of our children come from broken homes and they face bad influences from peers and electronic media. Our centers struggle to hire long-term, capable staff because, in the remote areas especially, people education. It takes longer to train the staff. Once they become trained, the local government often hires them away to become civil servants.

We humbly ask for your prayer support for those challenges, so we will have wisdom in solving these issues. Please pray that the parents of  our children will know Jesus and draw closer to Him, and they will be able to support their children's participation in the centers. Would you pray for our church partners, especially for the pastors, center committees, staff, and tutors? May God give them passion, strength, wisdom, health, peace, and joy in serving our children. It always touches me when I hear that a staff member accompanied a sick child to the hospital, even in the middle of the night.

A Young Boy Walking to School

Thank you for your faithfulness in sponsoring Prity and walking with your child on the journey to fulfill God's plan. You are in our prayers as well. May God bless you, your family, and the work you do.

Regards,
Georry Nefiantuty

Happiness is a Collection of Letters

That sounded like some ancient proverb. Haha!

But, I will be sharing several letters with you today.

First up, a letter from little Joseph. He is 6 years old and from Guatemala. His letter is dated June 6th, 2017.

________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Sponsor Kayla,

Your little friend Joseph greets you with lots of love and affection and he wishes you lots of blessings from God for you. He wants you to know he is in very good health and happy for you. He also says he would like to get to know you and your family through a photograph. He wants to ask you, how do you have fun?

________________________________________________________________________________

Now, we jump up a bit in age and read a letter from Joel. This young man of mine has such big dreams and I love that! His sister has big dreams too. I hope they both get to accomplish all they want!

Joel is 16 years old and lives in Mexico. His letter is dated April 22nd, 2017.

________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Sponsor,

I want to tell you about me and my family. We live closer to my mother's family because my father's family lives in another state. I have a sister named Milka who is studying to become a chef. Her dream is traveling to France and I hope she achieves it. My favorite sport is to play soccer. I also like taking pictures, running outdoors, and watching TV. The place where I live is surrounded by mountains. It is cold. It is also hot. One of the most popular legends here is the Legend of the Wailer. It is about a dancer woman who lost her children and she has been looking for them ever since. She cries and wails every night for them. Pray for my sister, my parents, and me. I would like to ask you what the place you live is like. Thank you for being my friend.

Joel

________________________________________________________________________________

It's a bit of a back and forth today. Back to a letter from a little one!

Airin wrote to me on the weather template. I have been receiving a lot of weather related letters lately!

Airin is 7 years old and lives in Indonesia. Her letter is dated June 6th, 2017.

________________________________________________________________________________

1. Right now, the weather is: Hot

2. When the weather is sunny, I like to: Swim

3. When the weather is rainy, I like to: Take a nap

4. My favorite kind of weather is: Hot, because then I can go swimming with my friends.

5. On my birthday, the weather is usually: The rainy season

Dear Mama Kayla,

Thank you for your letter, Mama Kayla. We are having the dry season here. I am happy because every afternoon I can go swimming and play in the water with all my friends. I am 7 now. I also like to help my mom to draw water, wash dishes, and do laundry. I go to school on foot with my neighbor friend every day. Please pray for my family, for them to be strong and have long lives and be blessed richly. May Jesus bless you!

________________________________________________________________________________

I will end my post with my sweet daughter, Faith. I call her my daughter because she recently became a total orphan and asked if she could call me Mama. I will never take that lightly. She is now in the care of a much older brother who seems to be a wonderful light in her life. Faith's letters have been so full of hope and happiness lately! She calls her brother and his wife her parents now.

Faith is 11 years old and lives in Kenya. Her letter was written on June 24th, 2017.

Hi My Sponsor!

How have you been? I hope that you are still going on well. On my side, Jesus Christ is the Savior and he has been my protector. I have got all of the reasons to thank the almighty. We are glad together, with my family members, as I write this letter to you. I am very thankful for the letter that you sent to me. My parents appreciated it since they were eagerly awaiting information from you. We thank God that we are in a peaceful environment. The climate has been a threat to some people. In spite of all this, we still believe in God, hoping in him. This year, we are going to conduct elections. I request prayers from you that we will have peaceful elections. It is upon all the pupils and students to pray and cry out to God. If the elections cause conflict, we are likely to be affected. From the book of Job, we learnt his story, which gives us hope and encourages us to strengthen our faith. Lastly, greet your family members. I thank you for your sponsorship and may God bless you so much.
