So, in the true spirit of being a sponsor, I have to think three months ahead of time. It is February, so it's time to send gifts to my kids with May birthdays.
Do any of your sponsored children have birthdays in May?
On May 8th, my littlest kiddo, Dafyne, will turn 5 years old. I am sending her a princess themed package. Along with the things you see in the picture, I also sent her a picture of herself, that I decorated as a princess. I don't have a picture of it anymore, but it's super cute.
I am sending her pink birthday paper, coloring pages, sparkley stickers, and stickers that she can color herself.
On May 10th, my love, Abu-Bakarr, will turn 11 years old. I just cannot believe he's already turning 11. He was only 5 (almost 6) years old when I sponsored him. It's been a wonderful 5 years. Because I sponsor Abu through World Vision, I am able to send him pretty much anything I can think of.
I am sending him an outfit (shirt, pants, shoes). I am also sending him some dog tags that I had custom made for him. I think he's going to love his gift.
I sure hope these clothes fit him, I got him clothes that are a size 10/12, so I imagine that they will. It's always so hard to tell if things are going to fit. I would love to see a picture of him wearing them, but I have never gotten "just because" pictures from him before, so we'll have to see.
Great gifts! I'm sure they'll love them! I'm sure the outfit will fit Abu fine. With Lawrence's football kits, one was an age 6-7 & the other 7-8. I thought the 6-7 might be a little too small but that's the one he's wearing in the picture & it's a little big! It's strange how we don't really know what size they are. For his next birthday, I'm going to get 7-8 again, just so I know it'll last him a while. I'm going to get his name printed on the back, which I hope he'll like!

I think they will fit fine too. I have to keep reminding myself that kids in the 3rd world are much smaller than kids in the first world. Lack of proper nutrition and a lack of processed food does that to a body. I know that Abu is super skinny, I just hope that he's not too tall for the clothes.

ReplyDeleteMy newest sponsored girl in Colombia has a birthday on the 3rd of June, so once March hits I'm going to start putting together something for her. So excited!! I love sending gifts. The shipping is expensive and filling out the customs form is a pain in the rear, but I really love going shopping for packages, haha.
I'm not so much worried that it'll be too big. I'm worried that it'll be too small. Most kids in the U.S wear clothing that is a size bigger than their age. If Abu was living here and eating like we do, as an 11 year old, he'd most likely be wearing 12 or 14 sized clothing, believe it or not. I think it'll fit him. We shall see what he says. I know the sandals will fit!

Colombia accepts any size package as long as it weighs less than 100 pounds. Awesome!
Oh awesome!!! I always usually ask on the WV Facebook page but this is much easier. I found out this morning that Colombia has very liberal package requirements so I'm very excited! It's annoying finding things that can be stuffed into a 6x9 that a 13 year old would still enjoy.

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how your customs forms work out, but we have to write down the value of every item. I usually just write down the amount that I paid for the things. Usually, I'm buying clothing for thrift stories, so I'm not paying more than $3 or $4 for things.
DeleteRomania has a similar requirement (i.e. the value of the package can't exceed $20) and I always do what Kayla does. I make a note when I buy things of how much I paid (by keeping the receipt or just writing it down) and then that's what I put on the customs form.
DeleteAnd sometimes, I may lie a little bit. I rarely say that I spent more than $5 on something, just because I don't want somebody in the country to see it and steal it. Things like that do happen in 3rd world countries, sadly. Heck, things like that happen in the U.S too.
DeleteBut, most of the time, I'm not spending large amounts of money on what I spend, so I don't have to fudge the truth very often.
I've never written the value of what I've sent Lawrence & it's all made it fine so I'm just going to stick with what I've been doing for now. Although when I've sent his football kits I've sat for ages trying to squeeze them into a 6x9 haha! It's good to know I no longer have to do that :)
ReplyDeleteDidnt see the bit about the form you have to fill in, we dont have that. The kits I've sent Lawrence are a bit pricey when they 1st come out at the start of a new football season, but I wait till they come down in price. The value obviously isn't an issue though since they've both reached him :)
